A healthy body…

Date Posted: Sunday 30 October 2022

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body but also the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity. Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong. In my judgment, physical fitness is basic to all forms of excellence and to a strong, confident individual. If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health. A sound mind in a sound body is therefore a short, but full description of a happy state in this world. He or she who has these two has little more to wish for; and he or she who wants either of them, will be little better for anything else. Therefore, our youth should also be educated in physical education. And, you can often discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.

The above are not my words. I have put them together with some tweaks by quoting six different people, including John Locke, Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates and the Kennedy brothers. Although some of these words are close to 2 ½ millennia old, they still hold true today. In fact, it is as if they were written today. Over the past decades, many schools have come to neglect the physical fitness aspect of education. We are starting to see some of the negative effects of the lack of physical fitness and exercise. I am therefore very pleased that at ABQ we have decided to go the opposite way, giving more importance to physical education. One step in this direction is our new annual football program, and I am therefore very proud to welcome Southampton Football Club to the ABQ family!
